Wooden, cardboard and foam puzzles for babies and children, chosen for each stage: large, easy-to-grab pieces for first discoveries, frames that help children see where each piece fits, and puzzles with more pieces for those who already enjoy a challenge. Further down, we explain how to choose the right puzzle for each age.

Start with the pieces: the younger the child, the fewer and bigger the pieces. Around 18 months, a wooden puzzle with a few chunky pieces, like Henriette and the Chicks (9 pieces), is the first step. Next come frame puzzles, like Lillie & Ellie (16 pieces) or Ocean (24 pieces, from 3 years), which help children see where each piece fits. From 5 years, Animal Reserve in Africa has 54 cardboard pieces and a poster to build alongside.
First puzzles make sense from around 18 months, with a few large pieces that are easy to grab. At Baby Kangaroo, Henriette and the Chicks, made of wood with 9 pieces, is suitable from 18 months. Always check the recommended age of each puzzle.
As a guide: up to 2 years, 2 to 9 large pieces; from 2 to 4 years, frame puzzles with 16 to 26 pieces; from 5 years, 50 pieces or more. More important than the number is that the child can finish the puzzle with a little help and wants to do it again.
Wood is sturdier and has thick pieces that little ones can grab easily and that survive drops and lots of play. Cardboard is lighter and allows more pieces and more detailed pictures, so it is ideal for older children who already do puzzles on their own. We have both in the shop.
Puzzles build fine motor skills and hand and eye coordination, help children recognize shapes, colors and animals, and develop concentration and patience. Talking about the pictures while putting the puzzle together also teaches new words.
Foam floor puzzles fit together into a soft, colorful mat for playing on the floor. The pieces are large and light, with shapes, dinosaurs or a rainbow, and they slot together and come apart easily. They are suitable from 12 months.
