Choosing the right Christmas gift for a baby goes far beyond the wrapping. Material safety, age suitability and certifications are the criteria that should guide your choice, especially in the first three years of life.
In Portugal and throughout the European Union, toys and baby products must bear the CE marking, which certifies compliance with European safety standards. The EN 71 standard defines specific requirements for toys: the absence of toxic substances, mechanical resistance, and strict limits for heavy metals. For textiles that come into contact with the baby’s skin, the GOTS certification ensures that the cotton has been grown without pesticides and processed without harmful chemicals. The FSC® certification ensures that the wood from the toys comes from forests managed responsibly.
Age suitability is not just a manufacturer's label: it reflects real stages of a child's neurological and motor development. From 0 to 6 months, babies cannot yet grasp on purpose, so the best gifts are comfort products. From 6 to 12 months, intense mouthing calls for BPA-free materials with no detachable parts. Between 1 and 2 years, stacking and shape-sorting toys build hand-eye coordination. From 2 to 3 years, pretend play and puzzles stimulate language and creative thinking.
